Artist Statement
The New Age Quilt Collections explore an art form steeped in heritage by transforming its traditional patterns into a new and modern reality. The artwork uses original photography accented with paint, and places the images into an architectural, three-dimensional setting.
As with any quilt, the process begins with scraps. These are created using photographic details of native flora and architecture. Locations include Austin City Hall, the Texas State Capitol, Rice University, the Alamo, and various downtown Austin, San Antonio and Houston buildings. Placing the structured and modern images into a traditional visual setting sets up an interesting contrast and allows for the idea that things aren’t always what they seem. Butterflies are added to create dimension and symbolize the transformational spirit.
The quilt patterns are familiar ones that everyone recognizes — wedding ring, friendship and star patterns are all used in some form. The “comfort effect” of the quilts resonates even as the patterns are abstracted, and the draw of warmth and tradition juxtaposed against the visual stimuli evokes a certain tension of the senses.
To create another layer of contrast, I’ve explored the effect that is created when paint is splattered in unrestrained and spontaneous patterns across the orderly and structured mosaic. The meticulous and detail-oriented imagery seems to celebrate the unexpected.
I’ve also used paint on the canvases to create texture and highlights in choice areas.
Three-dimensional elements are added to create abstractions of wall hangings or to stitch pieces together. I’ve used wood, steel, copper, glass and bronze to build the “architectronic” presentations.
I’m offering a double vision by taking a perception apart and giving it back from a new perspective, while striving to create another layer to what we thought we knew and keeping an eye on what could be. The result is what I call “Wow Moments”.
